Test track

The UK’s only continuous test loop

With a substantial pipeline of new build train orders needed to replace ageing fleets, Long Marston will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of the next generation of electric and multi-mode fleets to the UK railway. The site’s brand new 3.5km electrified test track allows commissioning of trains in the safety of a closed secure environment, freeing up capacity on the mainline.

The track, which is the UK’s only continuous test loop, allows trains to test at speeds of up to 50mph around the outer loop and is suitable for 25kV static and dynamic testing.

Access to 24-hour security, high-quality facilities, close collaboration with local suppliers and operational staff on hand means a full turnkey solution tailored to your needs.

Testing Capabilities

  • Low and medium speed dynamic testing
  • Capacity for 1,000 miles per week mileage accumulation
  • Fault free running mileage
  • 25kV static and dynamic testing
  • System integration testing AWS/TPW
  • Coupling tests
  • Brake tests including dynamic and rheostatic
  • Bi-directional operation

Innovative technology for discontinuous electrification

Porterbrook invested £1.7m to bring first-of-a-kind technology developed by Siemens Mobility to Long Marston, converting 11Kv charge into a 25kV AC power supply for discontinuous electrification.

The Rail Charging Converter is compliant with industrial connection and is suitable for various equipments and low connection voltages. It segregates railway from power equipment, ensuring compatibility with legacy railway signal and telecom equipment.

25kV overhead line equipment

The track features 25kV overhead line equipment, using Siemens’ patented Sicat X technology which reduces the footprint of overhead line equipment (OLE).

This is a TSI compliant system offering span lengths of up to 112m and tension lengths of 2000m. It has the same cantilever components as SICAT UKMS.

Signalling infrastructure

The site’s capabilities are further enhanced by signalling infrastructure around the bi-directional track, with passive provision for European Train Control System in cab signalling in the future.

The infrastructure includes a multi-screen CDU control system, Siemens’ “Control Guide Westcad”.

Everything in one place

Access to Long Marston’s high-quality facilities including a modern Asset Management Facility, 24-hour site security, fleet storage capabilities and training venues allows a full turnkey solution

The future of rail is built stronger, together

We believe the strength and success of the railway is in the partnerships that power it.
